Project Information

I recently designed and built this ping pong (table tennis) paddle out of Olive, Mahogany, Walnut, and Cherry wood. It was a fun project to practice joinery and bowties on. In picture #5, there was a void which I filled using reclaimed coffee grounds and super glue (idea from Woodworkers Journal, Issue August 2017, Tricks of the Trade, Coffee Grounds Wood Filler). Thanks for looking! Dale M.

I go back to the 60's as an ping pong addict. This is the nicest paddle I ever saw.

Do you suppose you could do something with the finish so I could put some English on the ball?

Thanks Dale! (Nice name, by the way!) I'm not fully sure what you mean by 'do you suppose you could do something with the finish so I could put some English on the ball;' if it's possible to reword, i'll do the best I can to answer your question! Thanks for the comment! Dale M.

I would never have thought about using coffee grounds as filler. Can you still smell the coffee?

Thanks for the comment! When I was sanding the 'filler,' I think I caught a whiff of the coffee but I would say that the finish smell now overpowers the coffee. However, being that I just applied the finish today, that may change. Any other comments/ questions are appreciated!

What he meant by English on the ball is ping pong paddles either have sandpaper affixed to each side or a thin rubber surface. The rougher surface allows "english" or more spin on the ball when contact is made. Nice looking paddle but to add either would detract from it's beauty.

Thanks for the clarification, Hermit! I thought of checkering it similar to the way I checker the pistol grips I build, but as you said, I thought it might take away from the natural beauty. Thanks for the comments- they are appreciated!
