Wouldn't that light kit make the car overweight? or doesn't that matter any more. It's been a long time since I was building pinewood cars with my kids. But I totally enjoyed the experience.

Charlie, the Pinewood Derby kit weighs less than three oz. These lights add only half an oz. The official weight limit is five oz. Plenty of room for the lights, plus you have to hollow out the underside to put the circuit board.

Wow, those are great cars you and your son built. They sure have gotten fancier since I was making them with my kids about 40+ years ago. I just love to hear of parents with their kids playing (Okay, working) side by side in the shop

Very cool. Sure brings back memories.
One trick if you don't already know…....hold the car on a treadmill and let the tires spin. Helps break them in and loosen things up a bit.
Well done.

Spending time with your son is always a good thing. When you help him learn something like woodworking so much the better. Way to go, Dad.
