Project Information

This is a 3' x 8' Pine Farmhouse Table. My wife wanted the one at Pottery Barn for $3000. The compromise was that I got a new jointer and a new 12" compound miter saw for $650 and built this one instead. I do cringe when the kids bang it up- although that's the way its supposed to look. (And I'd probably cringe more if I'd had to buy the $3000 one!)

Is the wood regular dimension lumber? If so where did you get it from? Also is there any kind of apron under the top? I ask because a friend of our family just tore down their car port and has a number of pine trusses left over and they would like me to build them a table from them. I really like the design.

I got kiln dried pine from a local hardwood supplier. The boards on the top are different widths. You could use 2×6 but I'd be afraid of it cupping. The reclaimed lumber from the carport might be just the ticket. There is an apron- it's 1.5" thick by 3.5" wide and fits into notches cut into the legs. There are several of the same dimension boards used as stretchers under the top and attached to the apron. The legs are also notched at the bottom to accept the stretcher elements of the trestle. Make sure to adjust the width of your apron boards to allow people sitting at the table to get their own legs under- we are short so 3.5" works!

Nice work. The construction looks like you did some half lap joints to increase glue surface, did you pin them also or use metal fasteners? I always convince my wife a new tool is needed for the job as well, that's how I got about half my tools.

the POWER of wood working vs retail purchase at it's finest.
$3000 at retail, for real? what was your investment after purchase of machinery?
