Project Information

My daughter recently started college for Architecture. One of her first semester projects was a lamp that transforms, she chose to make a lamp that would open and close like flower petals. I think the idea needs a little refinement but it's her first ever solo design and woodworking project and I'm very proud of her. The petals are fir veneer attached with short brass machine screws. She plans on refining the concept and maybe selling a few next year to help pay her tuition.

Looks very nice!
If Architecture doesn't work out, she can always study at the side of her old man and learn woodworking !

Wow Rick. She certainly understands the concept of humidity and its effect on expansion/contraction of wood. Very cool concept and practical ingenuity..

That is really amazing. I like the way it shows off the two colors from where it overlaps. I think she has a winner there.

Great project! You should be very proud!
Did she vent the top at all? Light bulbs do get very hot.

I love wooden lamp shades as they add a real warm glow to the room.
Nice job Rick!
Did you use an LED lamp to keep the temperature down?

She used an LED, no heat to speak of. I will pass along the compliments, thanks folks.

Rick-Looks like you've inspired your daughter to design and build stuff! I like the petal design and it looks really nice with the LED bulb. Good idea to keep the heat down.

This is a beautiful lamp, Rick. Please, pass on my admiration to your daughter! What kind of finish is on the veneer and how do the petals move? What grade did she get for it (shoulda been an A!)?

Thank you! She undervalues her projects. No finish, bare wood. They move manually, you have to squeeze them or expand them by hand; it's sort of a pivoting action. Squeeze the top, they expand. Squeeze the bottom and they close.
