Great looking, they are a lot more work than they look like. Nice shade.

Blake, My brother made his own pergola last summer. By the time I saw it, It was leaning severely warped in the center. I need to show him your project.

Did you use 6X6 posts and 8X2 Joists? It looks really beefy. I can't tell what you used for joist hangers. Would you mind filling me in?

I was wondering what those bolts were in the long boards for, before I read the description. You can't even see the steel. Good job.

Hey mark, yea i used 6×6 posts, and they were actually a bit over 6" so i had to cut the bottoms down a tad so they would fit in the footer brackets(my posts are above ground). The joist are 2×8, and the hangers i used were just that, metal joist hangers you can get from home depot and mounted on the house. What type of wood did he use? If you have any pics of his pergola in its current state maybe you can send them to me and i might be able to give you some ideas. Pm me if you need my email.

Edit: the hangers are called simpson strong ties

Howdy Blake,

I'm going to look for those hangers at HD. I don't have pictures of my brother's pergola. If he'll let me I'll tear it down and help him build one like yours. He used 4 4×4's and sparse 2×4's for the top. It's just not worth repairing. Thank so much for the offer all the same.
