Project Information

Here's a group of pens that I made for a craft show last week. All are either Slimline or European style. When I have all of them together like this, I can really tell that I've been improving. The woods used are marblewood (pretty sure), maple, padauk, african blackwood, oak, and a few others that I'm not sure of. the fifth picture is my favorite one I made, a platinum plated slimline of an unknown burl. Hope you like them, I sold all but 4. It's great when you receive compliments about your work, but even better when people like them enough to pay for them! All of these are finished with CA glue, sanded with MicroMesh, then buffed using HUT. Please let me know what you think of them, I take very kindly to constructive criticism. Sorry about the low quality pictures, don't have a nice camera.

Nice job. It is a good feeling when people hand you money and you hand them a pen.

Knife: The cost changes, since you have to account for how much it is to have a booth, how much the blanks are, how much the pen hardware is. I then factor in roughly how much time it takes to make one, and "charge" an hourly rate. The craft show was free, and I sold these pens between $25 and $30.

Those are nice. If it's a good show, you may not have enough.

Nice pens. How does the HUT hold up for you. I made a pen for my daughter and it dulled in a short time, perhaps an error I made somehow.

Would appreciate your response.
Thanks;

Good job. My wife thinks I should do that to get rid of some. Sounds like it went well.

Hey Charlie49,
I know there's two different HUT products, so I'm not sure which you used. What I do to finish is apply at least 4 coats of CA glue, making sure it cures in between. Then MicroMesh is down to a shine. After this, I use HUT Ultra Gloss Plastic Polish to give it that "glass" look. I know some people use other HUT products as finishes and don't know if this is the case for you, but I only buff the CA with HUT, so even if the buff rubs off, I'll still have a shiny finish for a long time. Hope this helps.

Nice pens Tim. What information do you put on your cards? I have been thinking about putting some cards on the pens I make that tells wood used and pen type. If your cards have this I would like to see a picture if you don't mind.

Nice pens, and feel great to sell them. Still not great on the CA glue finish. Thanks for sharing.
