Project Information

Boys and Girls,

Contrary to what many think, there's more to my backward mentality than you may imagine… and it comes in the form of reverse engineering.

I built this pen blank cutting jig a few years ago whose purpose was to accurately cut a pen blank for the appropriate brass tubing without relying on the accuracy of those bloody lying tape measure.

Gallery pictures;
  1. Back of jig.
  2. Front of jig.
  3. 3mm packer to extend the blank 3mm longer than the tube.
  4. 9mm packer as above 3mm (and Sierra tube in place).
  5. Antler blank in place. The extra 9mm will allow for drilling blow out and squaring ends.
  6. Front view.

When a friend recently saw a picture of the jig, he asked if I had any plans for it and could he get hold of a copy. To my horror, no SketchUp, so off to the PC, pressed the "R" gear on my chair and reverse engineered a SketchUp model,

The jig also sported a handy tray to store all my brass tubes and during emergencies, my valuables (cask of vino),

I won't go into a narrative of how to make pens (anyone interested can have a look at my Chrysalis of a Pen).

There is an animated video of the SketchUp Model and a video of the jig in use.

I could stretch this out a little further, however, it's time to follow advice and take my medication to calm my nerves after getting upset about sideways photos postings in another blog.

That bandsaw table looks larger than my table saw!

Any jig/device that eliminates indirectly transferring dimensions for a tool setup is pure gold. You have a creative mind there LBD.

How often do you don that hard hat in the background (need to protect that creative mind 8^)!

As SWMBO would say during her oft repeated admonishment, "Obviously once TOO often!"...,

also it doesn't protect from moon-slaps to the back of the head from her.

This idea can be used for other band saw applications.

Objective achieved if I can give ideas to other LJ'ers.

Reverse engineer? Is that the same as Bass Ackward? Sounds about right Duckie!
You have been a busy boy but it looks like that hardhat got a bit close to a saw as the brim is now 'custom' shaped…
Medication time already? Thanks for the reminder LBD!

I remember those days… In fact it was so early in those unfunded days that all we had was minus zeros...

Very clever using the tube and a shim to set the cut length! You're one smart Duck ;-)
