Project Information

This is a piece of Tamarack, (Larch) that my friend gave me and I made a little bobble for my wife. Its a little mouse peeking out of the hole.

The mouse is carved from Maple, then I drilled a hole all the way through the tamarack, and hollowed it out from the back. I then set the carved mouse in from the back like a plug, and finished off the back. You can clearly see where the plug was inserted from the back, (not pictured) but Its contoured to fit the rest of the surface so it doesn't look weird.

I really like the Tamarack, as it dries the bark comes off very clean and the only thing I did to it was sand down the knots, and then used some '0000' steel wool on the surface to give it a very smooth and silky feel.

Wipe on poly and wax…..sorta my go to finish as first told to me by a friend years ago.

Bill,

Your mouse is SO cute (even though we hate all the real ones in the wood pile). It reminded us of a box my husband made for our granddaughter years ago. There was an open knot in the oak that he thought needed to be filled.

Very clever. My cats would destroy this.
Well done.
