Project Information

I was mesmerized by the Park house in the 2019 movie Parasite, and one bit of furnishing that particularly caught my eye was a tripod lamp in the living room scenes. I really liked the moody, atmospheric light that it gave off. With some research, I found that the lamp was built by the Korean artist/carpenter Bahk Jong Sun, and I found enough images of one online to allow me to design something close.

Here's the lamp in a still from the movie:

And here is my SketchUp model with a spoiler tribute to the movie:

While the original was wood and brass, my version is all wood, a combination of cherry, Alaska yellow cedar, and Gaboon ebony. Took me about a month and a half to complete.

The light box has 4 louvers that can be swiveled independently to shape the light. The turret allows the light box to be rotated. I don't know what type of light source was used in the original, but I used a series of LED strips with a dimmable transformer, all hidden behind a milky acrylic panel diffuser.

This was an interesting project because there was very little joinery and very few requirements for precision. This was both freeing and maddening. None of the legs match and none of the louvers match. But the nice thing was that it doesn't matter. They're close enough.

For a deep dive, I've captured the full build in some blog posts.

I'm still working out just where the lamp will go, presumably it will be somewhere in the living room.

Nice, Ross! That was a fun one to watch come together, and I'm a little sad to see it done.

How cool is that, a giant spider, with a bomber alarm that lights in warm colors - a real conversation piece.
I'm all in.
You have done an excellent job.
Now I will have to check that guy out.
It will need a place with space.
Bravo,
Mads

I really enjoyed the process, from a film clip to reality.

Good blog, a lot of info and thoughts into redesign when things are not quite to your standards.

Do you ever end up making multiples of your work for others?

Thanks, all, for your generous comments. This was a fun project because it had some challenges (aren't those the best?). I've definitely identified some things I would do differently if I were to build another. To answer your question, splintergroup, I usually have good intentions to build 2nds of some projects, but I'm not always good at following through. Instead, I'm looking for the next challenging project.

I would like to do another of this lamp or perhaps a smaller version. I would think about bent wood legs with a routed hidden channel for the cord, different types of wood (not just what I happened to have laying around), and skip the bearing race for the turret (a simple UHMW disc would be enough). Maybe tweak the proportions a little. Is that sufficient "new" details to push me over the threshold to build another? We'll see.

Oh yes, that came out great. Have you considered doing more Parasite inspired projects?

Thanks! Actually, the first project I considered was the lighting over the dining room table (because I need one). However, I couldn't quite get on board with the look of the one in the movie. It's pretty plain, and it could easily end up looking like a lighted 2×4.
I know that the dining room chairs have been discussed on LJs, but they look pretty uncomfortable and a little unstable. So at present, I don't have any other Parasite-inspired projects in mind.

I would love to see your version of the dining table lamp. Perhaps a bit more in line with your earlier works as not to look too much like just a stick

If I do, I'll certainly post it. It sounds like a nice winter project.

Absolutely creative. I am working through some tripod issues on a repurposed surveyors transit tripod. Finding brass hardware aint that easy. Thanks for sharing. Brian
