Project Information

Two floating cabinets for my own use to house my electronics by the fireplace. Design was a pain as I had to think about cord management; ventilation since the PVR & amp burns pretty hot and not to mention the walls are not square.

They are roughly H14" x L40" x 18"D, made from walnut veneer ply from (Windsor Plywood) and finished with minwax stain & wipe-on poly. Actually I had to change the finish half way and a few nice guys on another forum helped me out with the finish rescue. They are installed by using French cleats to give it the floating look.

The inside is nothing special as there are no shelves. This was to accommodate all the electronics stacked up on top of each other. As you can see for ventilation and cord management the back is not completely closed off. The rear is supported with 2 horizontal rails held with glue and pocket-holes.

The front opens down with 4-way 175 degree hinges (customized stops with a screw) and there is roughly 1/8" gap all around, again for ventilation. The hinges are sprung to hold the doors closed. The door is held tightly with magnetic touch catches. All the hardware was sourced from Lee Valley. God I love that place. I guess that is why it took me over a month to finish this. You go in to pick up a few things and you end up spending a good hour or two.

Now I have to find the time to finish the other 4 floating shelves that will be mounted above them.
