Project Information

My wife and kids decided to create a fairy house for the garden out of the top of a rotten tree I cut down. They requested a front door (along with windows and a few other peices for the future). I found myself between carvings to take to work and do on my down time so it was time to make the doors.

Out of a spare peice of maple from the previous project I started working, few work days later this is what I can up with, the kids all love it and now my wife is eyeballing our front door…......maybe….maybe one day.

beautiful!
I looks so tolkienish… maybe the door to Beorn's house.

I thought it was the real door to your house from the first pic's thumbnail, that would be ultra cool.

That's really attractive. I agree it's kind of Hobbitville looking. Very nicely done.

AS some of us know; "no good deed goes UNPUNISHED". Well if it was not so neat you woud have escaped!

An art exhibit, not just a DOOR!

Check out the doors here and the video on how he made them for some ideas

However, do not do as I did and share them with your wife. She watched the video and sat up straighter and straighter. At the end she turned and looked at me and said very clearly, "Kitchen cabinets!".

After seeing yours, I think I may give it a try this next winter.

Amazing! - that first picture almost looks like a guy in a pointed helmet - the door knobs are the eyes.

I love these kinds of fun garden projects. Have you seen Elf Doors Public Art Project? If not do a google search for Keebler Elf Doors. (I like this one better.)

Thanks for posting

@leafherder I've seen the elf/gnome doors people have put in parks, and I'm a firm believer that the original person to come up with that idea deserves some kind of reward (I believe he still remains anonymous), but that is probably where the kids and the wife were coming from when they asked me to make this. there is a hole in one of our walking parks asking for a door too and the kids make sure to point it out every time were there to tell me that I need to make a door for the tree.

That's just great and a fun fun project. Giving that old stump a new life too. Maybe it needs a little garden gnome? ;)

At one point Keebler was giving out $5000 grants to artists who put Elf Doors in public parks (with permission from the Park District of course - without permission it is not art, it is vandalism.) I have a co-worker who makes tiny door sculptures and sells them through a local art gallery (for inside display not for garden accessories), he tried for a grant but the program had ended, plus he wanted to put them in hard to find locations instead of along the walking trails where people could enjoy them.

Have a great weekend.
