Project Information

This is one of a run of 12 tables I did of the same design after prototyping six or seven with different table top and skirt attachment methods. The "final prototype" was commissioned for a gentleman to hold a single orchid, thus the name of the tables. The skirt is made of hard maple wrapped in aluminum. Most of the tops were purple heart although there were some made from African Mahogany, Lyptus, and relaminated Microllam.

Welcome to Lumberjocks, Derek! That's really an interesting table for such a specific purpose, wow. You have way more patience than I do to make 12 prototypes. It would be interesting to see them all in a 3rd photo!

Nice work! I really can't imagine how you wrap the aluminum around the skirt so nicely. It's a really nice touch.

I hope the orchid isn't purple!

Thanks Steve,
It was a run of 12 after 6 or 7 prototypes, so lots of gift giving and wedding presents before I dialed it in completely. The run of 12 was a lesson in production as much as anything, what I learned was not to do production runs. Up to three of something can be bearable, but 12 was too many, it took all winter.
Lots of patient folding and refolding and scoring of the aluminum to make it work out cleanly.
The orchid was white so it had good contrast with the purple heart.
Thanks for the commets

Steve,
Great looking table. Wood (pun intended) love to see it with one of the orchids sitting on it.

By the way, since you are in Boise, next Thursday night please drop by Pengillies for me and have a cold one while listening to the Frim Fram 4.

Great looking table for the intended purpose.

I understand what you mean about production runs. As an amateur, people often look at something I've made and tell me "Wow, you could sell a ton of those at a craft show." But the thought of making a bunch of the same thing just sounds to me like taking something fun and turning it into drudgery.

how lovely!
I, too, would love to see it with the orchid. I imagine it is even more stunning.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it and look forward to some more feedback as I post other projects. What a great bunch you are. I'm glad Marc Spagnoulo (woodwhisperer.com) mentioned you guys and I came checked it out.

Tom, the tables are 9×9 tops sitting about 33" tall

Dusty, the tops are from 8/4 material, so they end up at 1.75" or so.
