Project Information

Here's a little step stool i made for my 18 month old son.

Its made of curly maple with a few spots of spalting throughout. It was my first project with all hand cut joinery including my first set of real project dovetails. The finish on it is a series of transfast dyes sealed with amber shellac and a top coat of arm-r-seal.

Its far from perfect but it should hold up to the abuses of a young boy. The lil guy approves.

Great work and very nice wood! When he turns two years old you may want to build him a "meditation bench" also know as "time out"

Great project man, i made one of these and it has gotten a lot of use, even after they are tall enough to reach the sink. Now we use it to reach the top bunk of their bed.

Looks pretty darn nice. I was a bit concerned at one point of the finishing process, but I think you achieved a nice looking color.

I don't get it. I just saw a three pak of these, in assorted sizes, at Ikea for $19.95.

But Stef, the ones at Ikea had dovetails that were exact and evenly spaced and matched perfectly. Plus, they were made of perfectly straight grained bamboo. None of this wavy grained stuff you had to use.

Good job man. I'm hoping you or bhog will make a blog detailing some of these finishing processes.
