Handle is 400mm x 50 mm x 30mm
Head is 150mm x 90 mm

socket and bolt head recesses via forstener bits
chiseled out the excess by hand, that will get bandit excited!
drove in the handle and wedged it LBD always likes a wedgie
put an extra bolt in Just in case, woodnt want that slugger coming loose.
Sanded them both from 80 to 120G used a 150mm pad ROS on each mallet and the tried Abranet but it was mean to it too!

Didn't bother polishing it as its a camping tool not fine furniture.
Finished with a coat of sanding sealer.
And just in case locked the sander away!

All I have to do now is work out how I can get it to him before the next trip!

I assume everybody saw the fireworks last night, looks looks I am going to have to live to 80 now just so I can enjoy them !

Interesting that you should ask that Peter,I wondered myself.

So here is the initial answer.

I actually thought they would be heavier.
I am not sure why the hold light is on, I will check it again tomorrow just in case the reading is an error due to low battery.

The non metric bolts were Smiths Crisps left overs, so it was better than scrap metaling them.
Yeah the Nod your head comment comes to mind! certainly would not want to do a dull thud with them.
Hey did you miss your wedgie?

So what you're saying is you have potato chips in the mallet head… Oh Mr. Potato Head… how low can they bury you?

Wedgie??? I did miss the miss giving me the wedgie… or we talking about beer battered ones… though beer battered… ... better leave that alone. Talking about beer battered... an appropriate jigsaw is in the mail, ready to test your male!

These mallets look adventurous enough for any purpose. You never know what you may run into when camping so better to be prepared. Very cool.

Are these to beat off the boxing Kangaroos Rob? Or to keep the dingos from eating your baby?

Now that would make me Thor too… no wonder the ranks of the gods are expanding… there may even be a promotion in the clouds for DW! Hope he (DW) doesn't read this, else he may be hell to live with.

It's good to see another project from the Red Iron Bark beams.
Do you know the technical norm for the wood? I'd like to look it up in the wood-database.
Camping seems different down under. What will you be wacking with those things?

James, sure thing, in fact I have already done that, it's how I found out you could polish it to a high sheen.

Distribution and habitat

Mugga ironbark is widespread and often abundant in woodland from south-eastern Queensland through New South Wales to Victoria. Subspecies improcera is only known from the Barakula State Forest north-northwest of Chinchilla.
Uses

The wood is relatively hard and dense, and is often used for firewood. It has very high resistance to rotting and can be used for fence posts, piers, sleepers. Heartwood dark red, sapwood pale yellow. Very dense, hard, fine grained timber, difficult to work, but polishes to a high sheen. Has been used for furniture, turnery, boat-building, benchtops. Popular as a craft furniture timber during the 1990s and early 2000s, Nicholas Dattner famously used ironbark that had been submerged as a wharf pier for 80 years in a range of tables. At about 1130 kg/m3 it is one of the few timbers that will not float.

The leaves are used in the production of cineole based eucalyptus oil.

Apiarists in New South Wales place hives in red-ironbark woodlands to collect the honey.

I can confirm it as like Ebony does not float.

Camping answers: tent pegs storm pegs and anything that needs a bit of heft to encourage to do what you want them to do, splitting and the likes I guess.

Pottzy I am working on it, I am on the way, I am just in the Barents sea at the moment the logs seems to be stuck on something submerged, looks a bit like a conning tower !
