Project Information

I am not a big fan of painting furniture, but this was a case of my wife bringing me a picture. What can you do? This piece is designed to be rustic, rough and country. I tried my best. Some of the boards were purposely left rough and unplanned to a certain extent. The drawer is dovetailed. I used a Porter-Cable dovetail jig. The paint is supposed to look like a green apple. It definitely brightens up the house. The wood is Cyprus. I got it from a retired woodworker. Just thought I'd share.

Painting the right project is appropriate. You shouldn't apologize for your own interpretation.

I like the idea of distressing projects, too. I once saw a program where a woodworker beat the top of a bookcase or table (I can't recall) with a length of chain to add "character." It was really cool. One of my favorite pieces is a walnut drop-leaf table at the school where I work. I has hand-planed marks on the top. It distinguishes it from the ordinary a good deal.

Very nice. Not only it's cool, the place where it sits will look cool too.

..but do not paint figured wood and the expensive one.

I'd say mission accomplished. Paint is appropriate on this project.

Nice job.

I'm not usre I agree with faux distressing, but the furniture in my house takes such a beating, I want it to start out as good as possible. Life will take care of the rest. I do like this a bunch. The color choice is particularly nice when matcehd with the hardware. Thanks for posting

I love it and it sure would look nice in my house with my lovely green walls!

oh .. and yes, painting is fine but NEVER NEVER NEVER paint walnut or you'll never hear the last of it! Sigh.. ((lesson learned)) .. but it was a snowman.. and snowmen should be white not dark brown!

Tim,

Don't feel so bad. Fine Woodworking did a feature on Milk Paint in one of the latest issues and look at all the kitchen cabinets, they are painted.

Looks good. Like the DT on the drawer.

MsDebbieP - I have a feeling there may be a story in there somewhere … I think it would be hard for me to paint walnut, maple, cherry, oak or any other hardwood for that matter. In this case I used Cyprus, which I picked up 600 bf for $75. I don't feel so bad. I am over it. :) I do appreciate all the comments. I am sure there will be more projects that will "require" painting. :)

the painted walnut.. but not all of the wood - not his hat… just his body, that should be white, don't you think? :)

very nice.

but i agree with HokieMojo - i dont see the need to distress finishes - not for my purposes anyway. it will get that way soon enough.
