Project Information

Pedestal for a large piece of art, statue etc. It's 30" across, made out of several layers of 8/4 poplar.

The first layer of color was a black dye that was sanded back, leaving lots of character in the grain and surface variations. Then another layer of two shades of brown to arrive a the final color.

The finish is a coat of Tried and True oil/varnish, hand rubbed in. Then two more coats of arm r seal, last of which was a wet sanding. Wax to finish.

This was a commission piece. The design was simple but actually building it has turned out to be exceedingly complex and time consuming. I did, however, learn a lot in the process.

Man oh man, although the design is simple but it is still "high-minded" work!

Making true consistent octagons is not as easy as it looks. Nice job.

I can just imagine how complex making something that can be. Since I am no carpenter, just a carver, I'd just have to put my stuff in the piano! Really nice, James!
