Project Information

We had one last plant without a a stand that has been sitting a TV table. I decided it needed a stand and I had the pretty piece of white corian with a neat pattern in it that would work just fine.
It is red oak and white corian with black corian threaded risers to give it a floating top look. The top is 9 1/2" x 14" and curved an all sides and it stands 26" high. The legs are doweled and screwed to the main ring and then a round shelf is pocket screwed to the legs for stability. I use my Fibonacci gage to set the distance for the shelf to the top on the drawing.

I'm thinking of something to turn to put in the hole in the shelf.
The last shot shows it works and the Christmas cactus is blooming early this year- maybe we are going to get a lot of snow again!!

It is finished with Zar 120 Stain and Formby's Tung oil.

Cheers, Jim

What looks like a simple design is actually extremely detailed execution.

Looks good Jim. I like the legs a lot and I see you even managed to use your lathe for this project. Nice wok all the way around.

Very good design and execution, but I want to know more about the mods to your Kreg jig. That looks useful.

I know my picture is upside down but I do not know how to correct it. It is not upside down in my iPad.

Jim, that is beautiful. I really like the pattern in the Corian top and the Red Oak grain is very distinctive.
I too, love the leg sweep, Great job.
We have the same colour Cactus exactly but ours is well finished flowering.

Thank you all for the nice comments on this little stand. it was more work than I thought- especially when that shelf height came out on the curve of the legs. I had to turn an 8 degree angle on the edge to make it match up.
Hi John. I mounted my Kreg fixture on a wood block with two pieces of aluminum along the sides and I use a DeStaco clamp to hold the wood tight. I have those other two plastic pieces that I can add to it for different thickness of wood, but I pretty much just use 3/4" thick wood. I did that in lieu of using that squeeze clamp they give you with the fixture. This is pretty handy the way I have it set up

Hi Mike, you sure have a healthy plant there too!

Also, for the curve of the legs, I thought I was going to have to buy a bigger french curve to run that curve out like that. Then my cheap side talks to me and says BUY???............so I made a bigger one with the help of the copier that will blow up drawings to any size. I went 200% and made a big one out of plywood. I had 3 of them: Gigi, Fifi, and Mimi…......... and now this one is Monique!!

Cheers, Jim

Your stand turned out just fine. That corian is beautiful. And those are scraps you get? Anyway, a nice stand and you definitely need something to put on that bottom shelf. It looks unfinished.

Jim, the only thing I see wrong with this is your plan to put something on the shelf! I like the detail of the void in the middle!
Monique is pretty sweet, too.

Thanks Pete, Dave, Candy, Cliff and Klaus!. Boy everybody sure like the legs. They had a different design to start with but then after Monique arrived, she made it happen. I cut them to length on the miter saw and they all set real flat after assembly.
With those pocket screws on that small of a diameter, I almost did not get to drive the screws in. If I did not have the "prairie dog" 90 degree drill, I would have been screwed

I'll tell Monique you all like her!!

Hi Dave. If we can meet up this week in Batavia, I'll take you to the place I get the corian. They had a wire basket full the last time I stopped and the price is right.

Hi Klaus, Those cacti must bloom when ever they feel like it. Mine and Mike's is Haloween, yous is Easter and they are done in Australia. I guess we can't call them a Christmas Cactus any more.
You should be getting your cross template soon. Dave got his today!!

Cheers, Jim

Jim,

I'd love to get my Christmas cactus to bloom like that! I think the 90 degree wood heat could be the problem! ;-)

The plant stand is really lovely and practical, too, with the Corian top.
