Project Information

For those familiar with Shaker box sizes from John Wilson, this is a size #17 box. I spent a week with John in Charlotte, MI in April. Bending this box is definitely a two man job. We bent three of these beauties. The box measures 32" x 24" x 12". The band is curly cherry; top is curly cherry veneer on Baltic birch ply (3/8") substrate; bottom is curly maple on Baltic birch ply (3/8"). Finish is satin wipe on poly (MinWax) on a base of gloss poly.

(Coffee cup is NOT a miniture!)

They are copper clinch nails. All sizes needed for Shaker boxes available from ShakerOvalBox.com (John Wilson and Eric Pintaur).

They are copper clinch nails (tacks). They are driven with a hammer against an anvil. The tip of the tack rolls over and clinches against the wood preventing pull-out.

I've made these for years, but never this big. Golly that must have needed real muscle & control to bend. gorgeous wood, and a lovely box..the shaker coffin comment above, made me laugh!

It actually bent fairly easily. It does take two people to bend it; not for strength but because the size is awkward. We made a short video of one of the bends.

Fantastic! I took the class from John at Pleasant Hill Kentucky some time ago and have made a lot of the smaller boxes since then. The big boxes are definitely on the to do list.
