Project Information

My sister requested a sofa table with a live edge for a home in the mountains.

I ordered the legs from Etsy and the top was a very rough cut of pine from the Black Forrest fire in Colorado Springs. The top moved quite a bit over a year as expected and the edges were split out pretty badly. I guess flash heating to 2500 degrees will make a tree explode.

Some T-88 and too many passes at flattening the top left me with a thinner piece than I would have preferred, but I've got more for next time.

I used Amy Howard Dark Wax after treating the top with vinegar/steel wool treatment. The treatment grayed the wood nicely which really tones down the yellow/orange I was getting from test pieces. I was so annoyed with trying 5 different finished which all turned the wood highlighter yellow, I started to buff the wax on like shoe polish.

Worked great! Nice satin finish, sealed the wood, seems durable, and easily repairable in the future.

You can see the gray color in the 2nd image.

Great color, it's hard to imagine that it's pine. Good job.

Pine usually doesn't make a nice anything but you just proved that wrong. Nice save and great end result

Thanks, everyone. I really hate what pine does when you add anything wet to it. The table looked great in my sister's mountain home in Breckenridge. She was excited about it.

I would give that wax a try some time. You can buy it at Ace, it was very easy. I will grab a container of the medium brown as well. It does not require any poly or top coat. Got to love that!
