Project Information

Completed July 1991.

Watch this video to view my master bedroom which seven pieces of furniture that I've built over the years.

This bed was a project in one of Norm Abram's books. Being the ever-precise woodworker, I built it tight to my previous box spring. When I upgraded to a TempurPedic, the new box spring fits with a suction fit…oops! The method Norm used to cut these long tapers was ingenious as he used a long sled that rode over the fence of the table saw. 3/8" bed bolts and 8/4 side rails with tenons make this a very sturdy bed indeed.

I originally built the bed with a canopy frame and my late wife sewed a custom canopy to match a quilt she had made. We eventually wanted a more open style and I turned a set of finials. That is the style I like best.

The last photo is from 1994. My kids have grown a lot since then…

Thanks! It's a classic style. The bed's high enough to store a lot of things under the bed.

Great furniture
You are right, a little at a time does it.
I hope you have a 5000+ square foot house and never have to stop building.

I'm mixing in furniture projects for my kids at this point. I'm building my daughter a large cherry wardrobe for her wedding in May. This summer I'll start building a new kitchen set and plan to give her my round ring extension table and six bow back chairs that I built in the mid-90's.

Outstanding piece of furniture! Like the classic design, great build and the choice of wood. Surely an heirloom piece. Kids are very lucky to have a great woodworker dad!
