Project Information

These are the start of a bedroom set I'm working on. I got the inspiration and basic design from Lumberjock member Steve C. I changed the dimensions some to suite my needs. Whereas Steve used cherry, I opted for maple (that's what the wife wanted). And, unlike Steve's use of pocket screws, I opted for traditional mortise & tenon joinery throughout. The side panels, drawer panels, top insert and drawer boxes are 1/2" maple plywood, the rest is solid wood. Although I didn't specifically shop for curly maple, I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of figure I got.

I'm still not sure about the handles - I tried for something that compliments the curves of the legs and rails - not sure if I hit or missed the mark.

I finished everything with 5 coats of MinWax WipeOn Poly, followed by some paste wax.

Really nice looking nightstands! I like the curves and the top is beautifully done. I love walnut inlayed into maple.

Just looking I might think a simple small round pull would fit these drawers well. The panels are small so a smaller pull wouldn't take away from the piece too much. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

Very nice work. The curves give that piece sort of an Asian feel. That top with the walnut and splines really are attractive.

wow - i say you nailed it
the handles do tie in the bow of the legs and since the drawer frame, top and legs are have bulk I don't believe the handles compete so it works for me though I can see BEWoodworks point

Sawdustaflyin - yes, I have full SketchUp plans available if you're interested. Send me a message with a private email account, and I can send them to you.

(BTW - I probably spent more time agonizing over the design and creating the SketchUp plans than I did on the actual build!)

Very fine craftsmanship. Looks like you started out with a bang, 3 top 3 for your first project posting, can't get much better than that. Good work. Now we can learn from you. Hope to see more of your work.

Very nice job! I really like the contrasting woods as well. I wonder how it would look if the top of the handles were arched as well??

Realy awesome curves on this incredible design. I like the wood combination. This is to put somewhere where anybody can see it not into bedroom.
