Project Information

This is a new frame I built for my son. Tried a few new tricks on this one as he presented me with quite a challenge. The design is his. First it's made of ceder, with blocks holding it together of poplar. Had some left over from his last frame and cut the blocks from the dark streaks. Now came my challenge, cutting the slots and blocks so they match and fit together snug. A first for me. I felt it needed some more strength so I drilled and added dowels. another first for me. A strong frame and best of all, no nails or screws! Also a first for me. Stained only with gloss polyurethane.

Simple, and lovely! A very appealing design. Cedar isn't rated highly enough in my opinion. Some really pretty grain there.

Your frame suits its subject matter very nicely. I don't thin I have ever seen a frame joined like this. I like it.

Beautiful frame. I really like the knots in the cedar. The poplar really makes the frame "pop". Great work!

Thanks for the nice comments guys, I really appreciate them. My son said he wanted a frame for his photography. I asked how he wanted it and this is what he came up with. We made a trip to lowes and he picked out the wood. So its all his photography, wood choice and frame design. I just built, sanded and coated it. I used a router with an up cut bit for the slots and table saw for the blocks. The dowels i thought made a nice touch and made it really strong. Thanks for looking.
