Project Information

I made this chair to donate to the local youth group in St. Helena, CA. They went to New Orleans to work for Habitat for Humanity and needed some help with expenses.

What is new with this chair is the finish. I was using outdoor polyurethane and then switched to marine varnish. The problem with those finishes is that you have to apply several coates and sand between each coat allowing for drying time. That can be a real pain, especially in the winter time in my area.

The new finish I am using is a oil/wax made for outdoor furniture. It even has a UV protection ingredient. I have done two more chairs since the one pictured above, a his and hers set, and this finish is the way to go.

Pretty cool Todd. Glad to see you are still doing your wood working. So did you only give this chair a single cost of the finish? What is the brand name of the finish? Where did you get it?

I gave the underside one coat, but on the surfaces that will be more exposed I gave it two coats. When you apply it, you put in on very thick and let is soak in. Then come back and wipe off the excess. The product is called Sunshield and is made by Howard. I found it at OSH and you can order it at amazon.com. I am sure you can find it at most hardware stores.

Napaman - you need almost an entire barrel to make a chair. It is also easier if you use the staves from one barrel rather than mixing from several barrels. The staves tend to have different curves, lengths, colors, etc. I have even found a difference in the curves within one barrel. This can be a problem when trying to match the curve on the chair back or in other matched pieces like the legs, arms, etc.

So the youth group was unable to organize a raffle or auction last year before they went on their trip. However, they held ont the chair to raise money for thier trip this year. They are traveling all the way from St. Helena, CA to to NJ to help rebuild homes damaged by Tropical Storm Sandy. They had a silent auction at the pancake breakfast last Sunday and the chair brought $650. It felt really good to do a good deed and have someone appreciate my work at the same time.

Not being from wine country, i only know one source for barrels here in MN and they are currently sold out . Any suggestions on sourcing them? And for perspective what is a fair price for a 59 gallon used red wine barrel? The company that is sold out here charges $150 per barrel.
