Project Information

I've been looking for a new furniture project for a few weeks, and always need stuff for the dogs, so when the newest issue of Workbench offered general plans for a platform bed, I figured that I could scale it down for my Black Labrador's 8th Birthday.

I used particle board for the platform elements, and poplar for the wood accents and rail caps. An exterior all purpose latex paint in Espresso covers the particle board, then three coats of Yellow Oak stain on the poplar. Finally, two coats of satin poly knocked down with 220 grit SP between coats covers everything.

The matress is my first time working with foam core, and I'll need more practice. All in all, a functional piece of furniture for the dogs that's a lot more stylish than a bunch of towels or blankets thrown on the floor.

And, Madison, our Black Lab, seems to like it, so it goes in the "win" column for now.

I have to admit, that when I first saw the thumbnail picture, I thought that that was an odd direction to put a mattress, or else it was for a bunch of kids to sleep on. Then I clicked and saw the dog and thought, WTF? That dog is huge for that bed! Only then did I notice the outlet and figured the scale out.

I'm sure the dog will love it.

Oh Jeez, this is a first for me. Many times I have seen a project here and thought "I better not let my wife see that, she will want one"...now there is one I have to not let my beagle see.

Thanks for the comments. I had great fun with this one, and Madison has already started to protect her bed from her "brothers and sisters."

All told, about $60 in materials and about 10 hours of actual work. I spent almost as much on the foam and fabric for the mattress as I did on the other materials. Next time, I'm building it around a standard dog bed!!

Maybe you can borrow it when needed…or is just me that spends so much time in the "dog" house.

If my dog would stop gnawing on every bit of wood she finds I would make her one of these. Beautiful bed.

Great stuff, Mark. I know it's been up for a long time, but I'm a newbie, and was just scouring the bed projects, and just came across yours. I'm thinking of a built in for my pooch in one of our dormers upstairs in our Cape Cod. She'll end up on our bed either way, but it's a sweet idea. Nice work.
