Project Information

Here's a new awning I made to go over my back door after the old aluminum one collapsed in a snow storm. The drawing of the awning is what I did in SketchUp before building it. It is made from pressure treated wood. The top is made from inexpensive decking boards. I wanted to use cedar but budget concerns prevailed.

Cool design but I can't help but wonder if water runs behind the awning where you would normally have flashing.

Water leaking behind the awning hasn't been an issue yet, probably because the top piece of the awning sits just below the prominent bottom edge of a layer of shingles on the house (hard to see on the photos above). I'll keep an eye out for leaking water though and report back if I end up adding flashing. I have some extra copper flashing I'd set aside for that purpose but ended up not using it because it didn't seem necessary.

Copper sounds like an attractive choice if you find it necessary to install some flashing.
