Nanny Rocker at the Ninth Annual Texas Furniture Makers held at Kerrville,Texas. Chair was built using
black walnut. Design was influenced by Scott Morrison.
I'm curious about how the seat was made (glue-up, solid piece, which direction does the grain run?) It seems like it would have a tendency to be weak in the center if "nanny" was on the chubby side.
I really like the idea here. Only problem I see is that for people like me it wouldn't work. Both of my kids had a sixth sense about when they weren't actually being held. So in our house that extra wing would have served only as a drink holder and magazine rack.
Charlie, the seat and cradle area uses 9 boards glued together. The chair seems to hold up really well to
plump nannies. It has had people over 300 pounds sit in it without coming apart. The cradle rail and 21 spindles
around the cradle probably act as a truss to strengthen the seat. Scott Morrison builds a similar cradle
rocker. He placed a lot more weight than 300 pounds in his chair and it stayed together.
Maloof has built several double rockers and settees that are about the same leg spacing as my chair.
Beautifully designed and executed. It looks like a real Maloof! I saw his exhibit at the Renwick Gallery and the cradle he made for his daughter was on display. I was also able to sit in one of his chairs at the exhibit. Got me hooked ~ by the seat at that!
Gerry what are the dimensions of the cradle part? Whats the width of the entire chair with cradle? I am thinking of attempting one of these in the near future.
I know this is an older post so I apologize for posting
