Project Information

I was at my local lumber supplier getting some 5/8 G1S birch for a job I was doing and I looked at the back veneer, it was this wood spices that I do not know (The last pic is the wood unfinished, maybe somebody will be able to shed some light on what it may be) and some of the sheets further down the lift had a back veneer of zibrawood. I don't have a lot of space in my shop but there was no way I was passing up an opportunity to buy a few extra sheets for myself. I just moved into a new house and was in need of a new desk to set up a little office in one of the spare rooms and the extra few sheets of "G1S Birch" I purchased were just enough. I opted for a more modern look, square edges, floating top, because this is only particle board so anything but square edges is out of the question.
I had some fun making my own edge tape by carefully setting up the table saw and slowly cutting off the veneer. I opted for a stain called dark walnut to even out the tones a bit but not darken it enough to hide any of the grain, while a natural finish on this wood looks great I think the busy grain would have overpowered the overall look of the desk.

Great job Chris !
It is very professional looking without being ostentatious.
The floating top was a great choice and I really like the flowing grain pattern down the drawer fronts.
Your choice of finish makes the grain come out just the right amount.
I hope you get a lot of pleasure from this nice piece.
And, congratulations on the new house as well.

Thanks Guys, and thanks Charlie! Its great to know what my desk is, and judging by that price tag I got a good deal… I only paid $50.00 a sheet.
