Project Information

I was sorting and cleaning my wood pile a few days ago and found this piece of wood that I could not remember what it was. After a lot of head scratching I just decided to make a box with it and call it mystery wood.
10×7x5"
I made the designs with my router and added some texture by sandblasting it.

Nothing fancy…just a fun Sunday project using a router bushing guide with a 3/16" round nose bit, using a straightedge and following the lines I drew out on the box

If you have any thoughts as to the wood type …let me know

Might it be mahogany? I have wood that is similar in colour and grain and people have told me that it is mahogany.

Not sure of the wood species, but I really like the design. Good looking box. I'd like to see one with a glossy finish.

Wondering where you were. I know you had some family celebrating, and you might be adjusting from your road trip.

You are a "Wood Artist!" Your brain just makes it happen. LOL! My vote is also mahogany as it's pretty consistent in grain.

I did think "WOW!" when I saw it.

Beautiful. Very clever meeting the lines top to side. The hardware latch is awesome. Haven't seen one of those around.
My guess is that is a piece of Sapele.

Love the design, even you "simple" boxes are amazing. As far as the wood not sure but I have to disagree it just doesn't feel like Mahogany maybe Sapele

Outstanding !!! I'm noticing your transition from organic to Art Nouveau in all of your work.

I like them both. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks much everyone...! I know this is not mahogany.. The photos and lighting keep giving it more of a mahogany color but the wood has much more of a brown color to it. I have some Sapele but this grain looks different. I am keeping the small scraps I have left so I can take it to the lumberyard and see if they know what it is. I don't plan on buying any more …but the curiosity is getting the best of me…

The hasp came from Craft-inc.com . I bought a bunch of them several years ago and saved the email receipt on my computer receipts file.

Greg, I have to guess again. Looking at my stock, a couple look close, but the Cumuru looks like a match. That ring a bell?

With something this beautiful I don't care what type of wood it is. Customers will be drawn to the color, style, and craftsmanship - which are all excellent. If anybody asks just be honest and say "I buy so much exotic wood that sometimes I have trouble remembering the species, but I can assure you this is a one-of-a-kind box."

Great job! Thanks for posting and for both inspiring others and giving us a goal to work towards.
