Project Information

Hi Folks,

As I've accomplished almost nothing in the shop in weeks, I decided to turn a hunk of myrtlewood that an old shop teacher of mine gave me. I'm not wild about the form, but the wood has some pretty neat character. I've never turned this stuff before so I can't tell you what the lighter inclusions are all about. The wood turns like most hard woods; it cuts fine, tears out a bit, sands in a cloud of dust. It's sanded to 400g and finished with Watco danish oil. Overall, I give it a C+ or a B- if I'm feeling generous. Now that it's turned I think it would have made a nice lidded box…oh well.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks, guys.

mrtrim: the only info I could find is that it's native to Oregon and Northern California. I didn't read much else.

Charlie: I'm getting pretty good at the strawberries, but that pomegranate really gave me fits.

Blake: you're too kind.

Mot,

This is nice, but I agree with you; it would have made a nice box.

Just kidding - great job! Way to get back in the shop and make something!

Nice job Tom. Interesting grain pattern. I was reading about the wood and noticed that they say that the leaves have quite an aroma (True Bay leaf). Did the wood smell when you turned it?

I agree its an A+. Maybe it was a B and your photography put it over the top! (Wink)

Thanks again folks. I'm not sure the aroma was anything to note. The wood was pretty dry. I think the bowl looks better in the hand than in picture, so maybe it gets an upgrade….I dunno. I was just happy to actually pull something out of the shop.

Wow those are huge strawberries Tom.

Or is it a small bowl? I'm going A+ also.

Nice job!

Since it's only a C- bowl, I'd toss the danged thing back to Oregon. I know a good dump in Jordan Valley. Send it down and I'll get rid of it for you and only charge you all the strawberries you can fit in it.

My two year old took it off the counter and filled it full of water. He got about an hour of play out of it. After it dries I'll see what I have to do to fix it. Ooof…he had fun though. He said, "You made that in the shop?" I said, "Yes!" He said, "Can I have it?" I said, "Sure." And in 10 seconds it was full of water. It brought a great smile to my face when my 9 year old said, "What did you think was going to happen?"

Tom, it seems that your 9 yo is a pit of wisdom, a real keeper. Should it be my daughter I'd be afraid in a few years when she becomes a teenager… Good luck my friend!)

I love 9 year olds-you are still a mentor in their eyes but you can have adult-to-adult conversations with them.
And then…. well, teenage years are around the corner. (nah.. my kids as teenagers were as fascinating and fun as they were as 9 year olds.)
