Project Information

My wife wanted a shoe shelf to go next to our entryway door into the house from the garage. I thought about just putting a quick square shelf in there, but I thought I'd try something a little more exciting. Who says a shoe shelf can't be exciting?

I copied this design directly from another LJ iozl: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/50975 . I modified mine some from his. I know it looks a little tall, but my wife wanted something that our girls' snow boots will fit in during the winter.

I did a lot of firsts in this build: template routing with flush trim bit, using rasps and files to sculpt the legs, and getting more practice with my bandsaw. At the end I decided to sink one pocket screw from underneath into each leg for added strength at the joint. I plugged it with a pocket hole wooden plug. I got so sick of sanding those darn legs. I ended up concentrating on one leg a day - to lessen the chance of dry heaving while sanding all at once. I digress.

Alder shelves with hickory legs. Finished with equal parts BLO, semigloss poly, mineral spirits - wiped on 5 coats. The final pics make it look a little warmer than it really is - there was some evening sunlight coming into the shop when we took the pics.

Thanks for looking!
Travis

That's too nice to put muddy boots on. It would look even better with a twin on the other side of the couch. You could nail some plywood and 2×4's together for muddy boots. LOL Just a little more wood around the joint and you'd have a Maloof style shoe shelf.

Really cool shoe storage. I really need to make a nice one like yours. Right now we have a rickity piece of junk that I don't really like. I think once I get finished getting my shop put togeather I will have to make something like yours.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments. iozl - thanks for paving the way on this one. I wanted something different and when I searched LJ for shoe shelves, I saw yours and I knew that was the style I wanted. I'm def going to try and keep the mud off this one.
