Project Information

I built this stool in a total of about 16 hours. It was my entry in the "Shop Stool Build Off" started by Chris Wong over at FlairWoodworks. Here are the specs:
Seat is a Maple Burl slab approx. 18" wide, 16" front to back, 2" thick. Purchased in California approx. 30 yrs ago, and sat in my friends moms garage for that time before she gave it to me.
Legs are walnut, started out 1 1/4" square.
Stretchers are Birdseye maple, 1 1/4" square.
Height of seat is 28 1/2" angled up to about 29 1/4 at the back.
Finish is Danish oil.
Joinery is round mortise and tenon, I used a vintage hollow auger and brace to cut the joinery.

I ended up winning prizes in two categories in this contest. One for the category "Best use of materials among Canadian stools". And one for "Most organic". A couple of pretty cool prizes.

Yes this stool is for my shop, it will be nice to have a place to sit when contemplating project details, sketching, or just resting. Thanks for looking!

After 30 years that beautiful piece of burl got put to good use. As Monte said, this needs to be viewed although sitting on it could be inspirational as well.

Beautiful but wouldn't stay in my shop long. The wife would confiscate it for the house.

My admiration of your wonderful stool is exceeded only by my envy of your great selection of hand tools.
Those prizes were well earned. Thank you for sharing both your woodworking and your tools, in pictures
only, would not think of asking to borrow them, OK I would think of it, but my parents raised me to know
better.
