Project Information

This is my first completed project! This one was extremely difficult considering I had no workbench to build it on…just a 5 minute makeshift frame made out of 2X6 lumber and the garage floor.

My dad knew I was ready for a workbench and sent one of his Woodworking magazines to me that had this design in it (if you're interested in the volume, etc. just let me know). This is built almost entirely from 3/4" Birch plywood. The table top is also 3/4" Birch plywood with MDF on top, and the edge is protected by Red Oak. I think an elephant could do a handstand on this thing.

I plan on adding a woodworking vice (or two), some kind of portable hook-on tool caddy, and a roll of butcher paper at one end. I'm also considering turning one end of the table into a router table, but not sure yet. Also, this table is 1/8" of an inch shorter than my table saw so I can use this as an out feed table. And the projects begin! Enjoy…

Great bench, Jason. I made this same one for my first bench a couple years ago and it is still rock solid. I coated the MDF top layer with Watco Danish Oil - glue just scrapes off and if the top gets scuffed up a bit I just wipe it down with a little more finish and it looks like new.

I look forward to seeing the projects you will build on it!

Are those legs laminated ply? My God they'd be denser and tougher than any hardwood I'd imagine. Nice job. You're next assembly will be much more pleasant with a nice area to work around.

Hello Jason,

You did a great job on this bench. I have built the same one as well. It is rock solid as you say. I added a 9" vise from rockler to mine and also built the underbench cabinets from the same issue? Can't remember. Welcome to LJ's. Look forward to your next project!
