Project Information
This was the first routed bowl I made a few months ago for my mother. I used the CMT Tray and Bowl bit, which does a great job. I used a forstner bit to take out most of the wood which saves on the wear and tear of the bowl bit. For my router, I made a 3/8" acrylic base so the router can slide on the template without 'falling' in. I've seen people using 1/4" wood as a base which is fine, but I like to see what's going on. For this bowl I used Maple and Cherry which were two really nice contrasting woods when I was glueing them up. But, after I cut it out on the bandsaw, the grain on the maple was a little darker than the edge. It's hard to see the three strips of cherry on the side. So, it didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but I enjoyed making this just the same. I finished it off with a food grade mineral oil which I didn't take a picture of.
