Project Information

I just received my new sliding Miter Saw and was looking for a simple project to try it out. I thought that this would be a good test of my saw because it had some 30 and 45 degree cuts in addition to the normal 90s. It's made of untreated Pine and sealed with Thompsons water seal used on decking. It's nothing fancy, but turn out really nice. It is big/strong enough to hold 4 kids at the same time, with plenty of room to spare. My daughter loves the table. She helped daddy build it.

The top is held on by three, 1×3 cross beams at each end and in the middle, for vertical strength and one 1×3 running parallel to the table top, between the legs for horizontal support.

Right now, everything is held together using 1 1/4 brad nails. I have some T nuts and bolts with lock washers if I need to add them, but for now everything seems pretty solid without them. And I thought it looked cleaner this way.

1 1/4" brads? I don't think these are going to hold over time. I would highly suggest at least carriage bolts on the leg/seat support intersections.
Would hate to see a kid break a leg or something if it failed with them all on it.

I had them bought but liked how it looked without them. And it seems really sturdy as/is. But, you are right, it isn't worth the risk. I put them in tonight. Still looks pretty good. Just not quite a clean.

What you could do if you don't like the look of the bolts is to half lap and glue the leg and seat support together.
