Project Information

I've wanted to do these for awhile now - finally getting to them. One of my other hobbies is photography. So this will be great to utilize my new jigs to knock out new frames any 'ol time now.

I got the design of these frames and the design of the table saw miter sled from FWW "Building Custom Picture Frames" with Mark Schofield. He explained it very nicely in their video series and offered great diagrams.

The table saw miter jig is awesome! I'm so glad that I actually built it correctly. I did one test mitered frame and the joints were dead on. Relief!! I then built the simple spline jig that rides on my fence. Easy jig - great results! I did buy a flat bottomed table saw blade specifically for splines.

Everything went very smooth for the frames. These are made out of mahogany with a birds eye maple inlay (mahogany spline). Finished it with a simple wiping varnish. Can't wait to do my next frames as the design elements are endless. These frames were a huge upgrade from our chincy Walmart frames for our kids' 12 month old pics in our hallway!

Thanks for looking!

Great looking Frames and the children make them look even better - good looking kids! Your frame jig is sweet, should make frame making a snap.

Really nice frames.. I've been building a lot of mahogany & maple frames, I love the contrast. I built a sliding miter table, which works great, but tends to cause chips on some moldings, beads especially. I bought a miter trimmer ( guillotine) that was the best investment I ever made. Perfect, glass smooth cuts. If you are going to make a lot of those, it's worth it.

I enjoy photography too and I enjoy making picture frames!

Those are very good looking frames and it looks like you made a "family" of them. Intricate detail and good photos of your work too! Did you start with picture frame moulding or totally from scratch?

I make frames too but most of mine are single piece frames, no miter joints, most of them less than 8×10 and some tri picture (3 5"x7" photos) in one frame.

Thanks guys!

dnick - thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind if I really get into this. I did have a couple light chip out on a couple cuts. Actually not as bad as I expected though.

oldnovie - Thanks! These began as regular stock - no mouldings were purchased. I just did a roundover bit on the router table before I cut my miters.

I like the woods you combined but the detail & the finished product is even better. Now your wife will never buy another picture frame again-you are going to have to make them.

Thanks for sharing.

Well, dakotawood, then a job done well indeed.
I really have never found pre finished moulding I liked enough to make frames except for one time when my mother had the material picked.
