Project Information

Hello folks, just joined Lumber Jocks and am posting my first original design project, which I finished just in time for Christmas (with about an hour and a half to spare!). Spalted maple serving tray in an ellipse, about 12" by 26", give or take, 3/4" thick with a 1/2" deep bowl. Cabinet handles and rubber feet underneath. Finished with a 50/50 mix of tung oil and polyurethane that I tried out.

No, its about 6 pieces from a single board, it was too cupped and twisted to be viable as a whole. But I mixed and matched the thinner pieces until I got a really good looking pattern and mostly alternating grain to keep it stable. Got most of the twist out of it too, just had to put a washer under one of the feet and it was good.

Cool tray! Like the unique shape and figures on wood which goes well with the sleek handle. Great work!
