Project Information

Hey everyone, I've been pretty busy lately, but I got a little time in the shop and was able to build this saw. It has a brass back that I slotted on my schools horizontal mill, and a .020 1095(I think) springsteel plate. I made he nuts by hand using 9/16 brass bar stock. I got all of my materials from McMaster Carr just for reference. The handle is padauk made in classic 18th century style, my favorite of course.

I filed the saw 11ppi with 25 degrees of fleam and 15 degrees rake. The plate has about 3 inches of depth and is 14 inches long. I built this saw as part of a trade for a Stanley 45 from Don W. Thanks for reading!

I'm impressed. I guess somebody has to make saws - but I never considered one being made in someone's shop, by hand. Well done.

Very impressive fit and finish, Wally! Nice to put a name with your face as well! :)

Your tote is superbly shaped! I'm certain Mr. Disston, Atkins, or any vintage maker of REAL saws would offer you a job on the spot!

I've been looking for something in my shop to trade for one of your saws…All I have is cheap paper signed by the US Treasury Dept. :( Buddy, expect a PM from me…

I've only had a chance to cut a few test pieces, but I've spent a bit of time staring at it. Very nice saw.

In case you skimmed the reading, even the saw nuts are hand made.

Well done.

spectacular. I've been making tools lately myself, made some lathe chisels and a little pull saw, but I never thought of making a Backsaw from scratch. BRAVO!

Sweet. If you can do this now I can't imagine how skilled you'll be in ten years.
