Project Information

I was commensioned to build this box to resemble a caterpillar color dump truck, my first go at it, wood choice was Alder after doing dye test it held his lemon color of yellow, little did I know that by adding the finish coat of Lacquer it would recat with the dye and wood choice, after doing test on maple it held it's yellow color without deviation, Alder is I think consider a soft wood, it's on the porous side and almost like a sponge I think the lighter color and the dense maple may have been the better choice, live and learn. I submitted these photos to the customer and am waiting to hear back rather she wants this one or I should attemp with Maple. All-n-All I don't think it turned out to bad being my first dump truck bandsaw box with a top tray. I used maple and walnut for the pulls and added a smoke stack with ribbed bed supports and a shovel for the center drawer pull the cab drawer has a hidden drawer in it 6 drawers total. Measurements are 11" W x 6" H x 3" D

Thanks for viewing :)

Excellent, Blackie. I cannot find one thing to criticize for this box. It is practically perfect in every way- and it doesn't get any better than that.

Once again you have gone beyond the normal in making a lovely box…Kids and adults will love this one. Great work Randy. I made the Fire Engine box and gave it to a friend that is retiring from the Fire Dept. and he really liked it…must say, it was fun to build.

Nice band saw box Randy. A quad axle would give you 3 more wheel drawers and a larger box. While you're at it, you might as well put dual stacks on it too

Thanks everyone, Marty I orginally started out with a duel rear axle but due to the layout and design between the front axle and the rear there just wasn't enough room for a third, need a longer box for that even if I tried to combine them together wasn't enough, if I get another inch on the box length then maybe, just maybe I can swing it as I am limited on my 14" bandsaw. I also considered a second stack just didn't put it on but on the next one I will thanks. Donna thanks for the gold star :) And everyone else thanks.

I also considered with the different size and shape drawers would be a great learning tool for the little ones though just not sure it's durable enough. LOL

I usually don't go for bandsaw boxes but I really like this one. It's like a cross between a bandsaw box and a wooden toy. I think you've found a new genre here !

BTW alder is, of course, a hardwood, but it is a fairly soft hardwood. The terms hardwood/softwood are a bit misleading. Wikipedia has definitions may help.

Thanks Dewey, my wheels are always turning up there and I know that what I'm doing to my knowlage has not been done yet on a bandsaw box. I know that I can't reinvent the wheel but I sure can and love finding ways to make it turn better. :)

Thanks for correcting me on the Alder, you are right it is misleading, I wasn't sure.

You are gettin to be the bandsaw box king. I like the way you incorporated the shovel for the drawer handle. Ahh, heck, I like the whole thing. :)

Randy, You continue to amaze me with your creativity and bsaw skill. This is just way too cool! The shovel is the perfect complement. Great job (again). I'd probably have to give this one 5 stars.
