Project Information

This was my first project started and was my first project that wasn't exclusively done with power tools. I have a lot to learn about hand cutting mortises (which is evident by my use of wedges to tighten the fit of the glue up. It's ugly as sin, but seems strong. I used a hatchet to split the rough handle from a split log of fire wood and I used a miter box to cut the head out of another log of firewood. I squared it all up on the table saw and then broke out the block plane, chisels, pocket knife, rasp, files and sandpaper to cut the mortise, shape the tenon, chamfer the edges of the head and round off the handle.

I don't think it would make Mr. Underhill proud, but it was the first of many learning experiences ahead of me as I get deeper into woodworking.

It turned out just fine. Looks very functional. You will appreciate it more since you made it yourself.

I have never met Roy Underhill. But what I have read about him, he would be very proud that you made something functional and nice from fire wood and an axe! Nice work!

I think you did a fine job, a may not be Mr. Underhill, but I do have 40 years of woodworking and furniture
building under my belt if that means anything to you.

Have a great and blessed week, Todd

Looks like a fine beating hammer! Make it to pretty and you won't want to use it!

Thank you all for the encouragement. I'm hoping this will be the first of many project posts and I'm glad to see this is such a supportive environment for beginners.

Looks good to me. I've seen Roy use a small log as a mallet, I think yours would work just fine.

Very cool. Having the handle extend past the head gives it an Asian feel. I like it!! What kind of firewood is it?

Thank you, BTimmons and Rob!

Rob, I believe the head is oak and the handle looks like poplar to me. I had a bag of firewood from the grocery store and decided it was time to stop thinking about making one and just get started.
