Project Information

I was disappointed with the "blotchiness" of the color in the Ash that I used for this project, so I kept it for myself and made another one for my customer. This board is made from 5/4 " Cherry , Ash , Maple and Black Walnut which had a knot in the edge of the board with some pretty nice figure coming from it . I assembled the board and routed the profile on it …The knot had split during the drying process , so I carefully gouged it out until I got to solid wood and then "massaged" it with my PorterCable ROS until I felt happy with the results . I really love the waterfall effect of the grain pattern and all of my guests make mention of it . I made this about 5 years ago and have since routed a juice groove into the back of it where I have done most of the cutting on this board . Your comments are welcome and appreciated : )

Hi Dusty;

Gee do you think you're a perfectionist?

I mean really, this one wasn't good enough for a customer?

I'd like to see the one you felt WAS good enough!

Beautiful!!

Hello Lee and thank you for the comment . If you look at the Ash in the pictures , you will notice what I meant by "blotchiness" . Most of the Ash is creamy / yellowish color , yet some areas of it are almost white and appear to be bleached out or stained . It was extremely noticeable when the board was brand new . The wood is quite solid so I really have no clue why it differs in color. I didn't have a camera back when I made the other board for my customer , so no pix of that one . Same design , except I thoroughly examined the next Ash for flaws and of course the knot and special grain weren't in the Black Walnut …...Thanks again for your feedback and I look forward to your next post as always : ) Have a great day !

Another great piece of work Dusty. You use a lot of differnt types of wood that I would never have thought of. This gives me some insight for future projects.

Nice. Beauty and Functionality. Not too fancy to be afraid to use it.

Great looking board! The edge detail really highlights the design. All of the "Soft" edges contrast very nicely with the crisp 90 deg edge detail. Very nice work!
