Project Information

One of the jobs we have at a local museum here in town is making some signs to place along the road to the museum. I like making trade signs & take photos of them whenever possible. I found this heavy duty rustic design at "Bear Skin Neck" up in the Cape Cod area. I used 4"X6" & 4"X4" rough lumber for the frame & pine 1"X12 for the sign area. I found a font on my computer that I liked… sized up & printed up the lettering… Enlarged the lettering on a copier & used spray adhesive to attach the paper to the sign. It wasn't too bad carving the letters because I was able to carve right through the paper into the wood. After initially carving the letters I removed the paper & "cleaned up" the lettering. I used ordinary oil base exterior paint & gold paint to fill in the letters.

Beautiful border, very creative. I haven't done anything with this much color, but I've painted carved letters with regular black acrylic paint, then applied a clear exterior water-based finish. It's held up well to the outdoor elements so far.
