Project Information

This is a murphy wall bed that I call the Smithsonian. The first one I built like this was for the Smiths, hence the SMITHsonian name. This is one that I make the desk disappear into the face of the murphy bed. I actually modify the Create-a-bed building instructions for the inner frame to house the folded desk and Modify the face as well.

The first one took a while to make sure the desk was level. There are a lot a variables that effected other parts and measurements.

This one was built in Maple and was finished out by the customer. It was finished in March 2015. Another variation that I did on this one was to use the Deluxe leg from Create-a-bed. This eliminated the normal leg blocks I normally put on that fluted edge. See old Smithsonian Murphy Bed.

For more building pictures see my Current Projects page wwbeds.com or I have 6000+ pictures divided by month in my Picture Archives.

Maybe you could have built a refrigerator into a desk, into a bed, onto the wall.

Cool stuff.

The latches on the front don't work for me.
Maybe you could use a cam lock that would be more realistic to be on a door.

I see your point on the latches. The problem with most cam locks is they protrude out the back and that leg support is seated against the bottom of the table top. It may work if I find a cam lock with a lower profile (maybe comes out the side) and figure a way to use a different hinge to get some space in between the two panels. If you have a cam lock in mind please send me the link. Thanks for the comment.
