Hi:
I undertook my most recent project in response to a request from my wife for a “directional sign post” for the front of our house.
A bit of searching online provided a host of examples to draw from.
I decided to go with a treated 4”x4”x12’ post, and for the signs 5/4” x 6” treated decking boards.
It took a while to understand how to position the post so that it was accurate to the N/S/E/W compass points, and then some more time to identify the locations I wanted to be represented on the sign post, and which way they were to point. The post is set into a hole filled with concrete.
I use the compass function on my iPhone to locate magnetic north and then adjusted all the signs accordingly.
Since I am a wood carver, I decided to hand carve each of the signs, employing whatever typeface seemed appropriate to the specific location. I then painted the main colors, and later each of the letters. The top coat I chose was marine spar varnish, which is suitable for the outdoors.
In total there are 10 signs and 20 locations indicated on the post.
