Project Information

Hi All,
This project came about because I found two cast iron table saw wings on Craigslist.

I needed an adjustable height out-feed table for my band saw and also always wanted a robust shop cart. ( I found I can also use it as an in-feed table for my table saw)

Well, I combined the two ideas and this is what came about. I drew the cart out on my CAD program and quickly got to work on the build.

I bolted the iron wings together and bolted red oak rails to the sides. then I drilled holes for the height adjustment hardware which I then installed. I made a bench top that bolts over the cast iron top. that is a torsion box made out of 3/4" Baltic Birch ply and wrapped with red oak. The top has a 1/8" replaceable hard board skin.

The base was built out of red oak with wedged double tenons for the joinery. I also made a drawer surround and hand dovetailed drawer. I didnt want the cart to be top heavy, so I made a custom cradle for two 45 pound barbell weights.
The finish is a Linseed oil /Tung oil / Varnish mixture.

The chain drive works very well and makes it easy to adjust the height of the table.

As I was making this project about 2 months ago, I took a bunch of pics and video and will post the link at the bottom. Since then, I use it ALL of the time. Very handy to have around the shop!

Great Job Ryan. It looks really polished, like something from Woodcraft.

I like that lifting mechanism too. I have an older Delta 18-36 drum sander with a table that rises and lowers (instead of the drum head), and the original mechanism was awful, so I replaced it with my own approach that might be just right for the kind of thing you've done. Are those some sort of geared nuts that the chain surrounds? I'll check out the video too.

Thanks Jim!
I bought the gears and #40 roller chain on eBay. Search for 3/4" Type B Hub Stock Bore Sprocket for #40 Roller Chain 9 Tooth. They fit 3/4" all-thread rod nicely.

Wow! That thing is tough looking! Did you use an old table saw or something for that cast iron top?

(sorry if the answer's in the video - I didn't watch it) Really cool lift mechanism too! I can see using that cart a lot.

Wow! Ryan, this is a fine shop made table and it's very creative and beautifully done. It is a great addition to your shop. Congratulations and welcome to Lumberjocks.

Sorry to be a pest Ryan, but a few questions on those sprockets…

They're not threaded. Do they attach to the rod somehow? Does the rod spin?

I was hoping to find similar sprockets, but with threaded hubs, so that as they were all turned by the chain, they all would move up or down 4 stationary rods at the corners.

Hey, No problem! The rods do spin. I searched for threaded sprockets and couldn't find any that would work for me. So, I went with the sprockets that have a smooth bore and two set screws. I just removed the set screws, lined up the sprocket on the all thread and used a hardened steel punch to punch a starting dent and drilled into the all thread 3/16" and screwed in the set screws. It worked great.

Hi PPK,
The top is a pair of wings off of a Jet table saw that I found on Craigslist for $50
