Project Information
I have had one of these for a little while and love using it, so for this surprise swap I decided to make one with some improvements for John McClure!
Mine is 12" tall which can be a bit much depending on the task at hand so I made this one 6" and it can always be clamped to a spacer if desired.
I used 8/4 walnut and maple throughout. Mine has no dog holes (and is thinner) so I wanted to try a thicker top. It ended up working out great!
I turned walnut dowels for the screws but they didn't turn out so well so I ended up using poplar 1-1/4" dowels. I learned that you need to soak them really well in oil (I used mineral oil) to minimize tear out from the thread box!
I turned the wheels on the lathe from the same walnut, kudos to the experienced turners- I'm not there!
I attached some leather to the chop (rough side out) with carpet tape so it can hopefully be replaced easily enough when needed.
I added dog storage holes in the "legs" and I notched the fixed chop so it can be clamped to a bench or table edge.
All in all I'm pleased with it, it can be stashed under a bench when not needed and put to work easily.
Thanks for running a great swap Tony!
