Project Information

Chisel racks made from scrap pieces from a packing crate. Wood was hand planed to about 3/8" thick. Holes on top are 1/2" diameter. Overall size is 12" across, 7" high, 1 5/8" wide plus French cleats and bottom pieces of 3/8" wide. Front bottom piece is 2 1/4" high - just enough to cover tips of most of the chisels.

This gave me a chance to use Grandpa's old hand planes and practice some hand-cutting of the joints. The racks can stand alone on top of the workbench or hang on the French cleats on the wall. The intention is that they will eventually fit inside the doors of a wall hanging tool cabinet (yet to be built).

No power tools were used. Please note - some sawdust is still on workbench.

Nice job, I like what you've done. How is the stability factor when they are free standing and not on the French cleats on the wall?

I love the idea of a movable rack. Hang it on the tool cabinet doors when you're not using it and then carry it over to the bench when you need them. Have you thought about adding some weighs to the bottom to keep it stable on the bench when standing upright? Does it need it? Or, design it to be laid down on its back, to avoid the issue of tipping… Great idea.

Brilliant idea to store chisels. Looking forward for the completion of the entire plan. Good job.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Stability isn't a problem. The weight is centered in the top piece. The back bottom piece sits on the workbench and completes a rectangular contact with the workbench, plus it will keep it the same distance off the door of a cabinet that the French cleat does.

Just wanted to circle back on this. Rich, I've kept this in the back of my mind for a while now, and finally got around to building a new tool cabinet, in which I could incorporate something like what you did. Take a look, if you're interested, and thanks for the inspiration!
