Project Information
Hi everyone. Thanks for visiting my 1st posted project. I have gained so much knowledge on this board, I figured it was about time to contribute.
I recently purchased a Woodpeck Drill press table for my Porter Cable Floor Standing Drill Press. Since the table that comes with the Drill Press is geared more towards drilling metal, I had to find a way to mount this table and still have the ability to quickly remove the table, when I have the need to drill into metal.
The bad news is that the table the drill press came with, does not have any through slots, which makes mounting a table quit a challenge. There is one threaded hold in the side of the table, which you can use to connect tubing or a catch container, to capture lubricant/coolant when drilling through metal. In the center of the table, there is a 1" hole that goes all the way through to the bottom.
I search for some projects to get some ideas and ran into this one created by bfergie on this forum. Great project, but I wanted to do something different.
Here is what I came up with. I took a 1" dowel and trimmed it down on my lathe, to fit through the center hold of the PC drill press table. I mounted the dowel onto a 3/4" piece of plywood by first using a forstner bit to drill a 1" diameter, ~1/2" deep hole. I then glued and screwed the dowel in.
Next, I installed the largest t nut I could find (3/8") into the plywood, positioned over the threaded hole in the PC table. I then mounted the plywood onto the drill press table using a 3/8" bold with a couple of washers. The plywood was solid, did not move at all. I then mounted the Woodpeck table on top of the plywood.
This is a real simple setup to undo. If I need to take the Woodpeck table off the PC table, I just undo 1 bold under the table and lift off the entire Woodpeck/plywood piece. Quick and easy. For the sake of showing the dowel going into the center hole, one of the posted pictures has the table floating using a scrap piece of wood. This scrap was just used for this picture, do not use a scrap piece when mounting the table for use.
