Project Information

I've had the Ridgid spindle/belt sander for years and finally got around to building the seemingly obligatory flip-top cart for it to sit on. I ended up building the "Fisher Flip Top Cart" version and mounted my Work Sharp 3000 to the other side because I can't think of a case when I would use both of these tools at the same time. I choose this version because I liked his solution for integrating the power cords of both tools. More details about the design can be found here.

I had to make the drawer and cabinet sides 2" taller than the plans to accommodate the glass wheels for the Work Sharp and didn't have any walnut to make a drawer pull out of (beech wood had to suffice). I used 2" locking swivel casters and had to order the swivel locks from amazon because I couldn't find them in the box stores.

I will probably come up with better organization for the drawer but this works for now.

Thanks,
I wish I could take credit for the design but I agree the design is nice. Another "feature" of flip top carts is they help get the dust out of the sander when turned upside down (as shown in picture 2). my old shop (err basement floor) was neither flat nor level and rolling shop carts were a hassle. i am really appreciating the flat floor in the new shop (it's a garage) now I understand all the praise these rolling carts receive.

I have thought about doing this for years but one of the tools it would have to accommodate is my 12" planer. It is just so damn heavy I worry that I couldn't counterbalance it.

on one of mine, I have my Delta 12 1/2 inch planer, and my Ridgid OSS on the other side. The planer is much heavier, but I haven't had an issues with stability or flipping it

Very nice work. Fisher has probably the best design for one of these carts around. I like how his has positive stops and the top actually rests on the sides instead of using eye bolts.

Eric- i like the cart and have thought about building another one. I just don't know what two tools I would put on it. hmm might have to acquire some more tools.

Andy-I didn't put my planer on this cart because I didn't want it sitting this high ( a lot of folks do put their lunch box planers on the same cart as the OSS). I have an idea to put my planer on a cart and match the height to my out feed table. We will see if/when that happens. The extra two inches on the cabinet height had the benefit of bringing the sander closer to eye level for me.

sansoo22- agree the positive stops and internal power strip are what sold me on his design.
