Project Information

I am excited, how about you?

I made 5 more boxes out of the 8/4 cherry I that I bought. I believe that I am in a lot more control of my router machine. I completely disassembled the front end of it, and solved a flex issue by shimming the vertical track with a hacksaw blade. It is good and tight now. I actually am getting used to this machine, as it had been in the corner for a couple of years.

I tried some variations on a theme. I now have three body types: Oval, Round, and Squarish. They all share the design on the side of the box and the magnetic latch while pivoting on a dowel. I experimented with some top designs too: text, birds, and geometric. The tops are the most fun part to make. I believe I see several Christmas presents.

I took a picture of some of my failures too. It has been an adventure. Now I can throw them in the fireplace.

And finally a picture of my grandson Loren on his first birthday. I don't see any Scandinavian heritage, do you?

Comments are very welcome. What do you think of the tops and the box designs?

Super nice job. I also have been practicing with my CNC router.
I got Vcarve pro and photoVcarve. I like what you've done
with the different shapes. I was looking for a container for my
new sea salt I just purchased, now I think I've found it.
You always do amazing work. How did you get that neat
profile on the side of the red pepper flake container? Cool.
Thanks.

Now you're on a roll Steve. They're all pretty cool but my favorite is the Heron. It's good to see you using the machine. Who knows, it may eventually be as much fun as building it.

I like 'em all.

Uff Da Steve - I see that Loren got the full effect of his first birthday…...I put my money on the girls made him do it…..

The boxes are great - I like the bird with the grass, but the all the boxes look good - the tapered sides are incedible. Glad to see you are cranking up the cnc. Such a cool tool..

They all look great, Steve. Although I am partial to your first one.

Have you considered a laminated salt box?

I really can't believe you haven't done one for "Old Bay" yet! Come 'on now - I wanna see that! ;-)

Thanks everyone.

Ha, Old Bay. I can cut any Windows font. Does Arial Bold look close enough to their typeface? I wanted to go kind of Artsy Craftsy so I chose Copasetic for the existing tops.

Jack: You spotted the Yin Yang. The wife unit nixed that one. I kinda liked it. Also the dual figure 8.

On the tops I tend to like the designs more than the text. But that is why I tried a variety.

LTC, the scallops on the sides were done with the Fluting tool in Vcarve. I first did a fatter profile around the box. Then I drew 4 curved segments around the outside of the design, and told the software to follow those segments while gracefully plunging and gracefully returning. It took some experimentation, but really makes the box special.

Steve,

The perfect font for 'Old Bay' is Arial Black - I would love to see that!

If I were to do this, the box would have to be twice the size of my salt one. ;-)

Hi Steve.

Fortunately Loren learned to eat by himself.
That left some time for you to play the CNC.

Congratulations. Great stuff.
Can´t wait to see your next step

There all nice, I like that first design you did the best. Have you tried a person's profile yet. I bet Loren's mama would love one of these little boxes with his profile cut into the top.

Beautiful job Steve, love that rich colour it adds some extra to them, great selection of lid engraving. Hope you have an OSH plan for the young guy coz he'll want to get out & play with Grandads toys soon enough, :: )))))
