Project Information

Here are 3 planes I just finished making. A while ago I made a scrub, joiner, long smoother planes and thought I'll do a small block plane.

Leftover ipe 2×4 was laminated for the first blank. I thought using such dense wood would be great for a hand plane but in retrospect it was quite a pain to shape and form. I had to do it with files and rasps. Then, after I was finished and so happy to have a new plane someone pointed out the steep angle of the blade. Only then did I realize I placed the iron on the front of the plane, in fact reversing it. Turns out it was not waste after all. It performs great f difficult or end grain. Hing angle and ipe heft of the plane are great.

I decided to rectify this mistake and try another block plane, this time white ash. Blank was large enough for two planes so I though might as well. Ended up making the front concave which makes for easy shaving removal as well as prevent me to make the same mistake with the plane iron again.

Love the planes.

Believe me, building it backwards is way better than some of the boneheaded mistakes that I have made building planes. It's really depressing when you figure out that you didn't leave enough room for the wedge and the blade. LOL

Great looking tools, congratulations. What do you have against rasps and files?

Thanks. I have nothing against rasps and files sergiozal, it's just not my preferred tool when it comes to flattening and squaring off the ramps after cutting it with band saw. It takes time that's all.

Seimyo,

Are you using chip breaker between blade & wedge?
Did you buy or make them?
